    SUSY models with a gauge singlet easily allow for a strongly first order electroweak phase transition (EWPT). We discuss the wall profile, in particular transitional CP violation during the EWPT.     Liquidity Effects of Changes in a Pan-European Stock Index

    Adding or deleting a security to or from an index can influence the share price considerably. A possible explanation that has been brought forward in the literature is the liquidity hypothesis according to which an increase in liquidity after an addition is responsible for the observed rise in value. In the following paper, we examine liquidity effects on securities that have been added to or deleted from the pan- European index STOXX 50 between 1998 and 2003, using bid-ask spreads as indicators for liquidity. While there is a medium term price effect, bid-ask spreads do not change significantly due to the index addition or deletion. Regression analysis shows that the explanatory power of bid- ask spreads for the observed price effect is negligible. As a consequence of our empirical findings, the liquidity hypothesis has to be rejected for the STOXX 50. This result, however, does not appear particularly surprising, as the STOXX 50 is composed of already highly liquid securities whose trading liquidity appears not to depend on membership in an international index. A possible explanation for the rejection of the liquidity hypothesis is that the applicability of the liquidity hypothesis hinges on the liquidity class of the stocks concerned before being added. Marginal increases of liquidity due to an index addition might decline with larger initial liquidity of the stocks added.     Valuing Joint Ventures Using Real Options

    As the valuation of strategic measures becomes increasingly important, relatively few articles have discussed the valuation methods pertained for joint ventures. This paper shows that real options contribute to a better valuation of joint venture projects through superior reflection of the value drivers compared to traditional valuation methodology. Particularly, the strategic value of a joint venture and the value of flexibility that stems from a less than full commitment can be determined using options valuation. Besides reviewing the basics of real options, the paper discusses the key levers of joint ventures and shows the power of real options in the valuation process. We apply four option types (option to defer, option to expand/acquisition option, option to innovate, and option to abandon) to an imaginary joint venture example and show how to use the Black/Scholes and binomial valuation techniques to value these options. Of the four option types, particularly the option to innovate is important, as it allows to reflect the strategic value of a joint venture generating future business opportunities.     Spin texture of generic helical edge states

    We study the spin texture of a generic helical liquid, the edge modes of a two-dimensional topological insulator with broken axial spin-symmetry. By considering honeycomb and square lattice realizations of topological insulators, we show that in all cases the generic behavior of a momentum-dependent rotation of the spin quantization axis is realized. Here we establish this mechanism also for disk geometries with continuous rotational symmetry. Finally, we demonstrate that the rotation of spin-quantization axis remains intact for arbitrary geometries, i.e. in the absence of any continuous symmetry. We also calculate the dependence of this rotation on the model and material parameters. Finally we propose a spectroscopy measurement which should directly reveal the rotation of the spin-quantization axis of the helical edge states.Comment: 16 pages, 17 figure

    A Model Reduction Framework for Efficient Simulation of Li-Ion Batteries

    In order to achieve a better understanding of degradation processes in lithium-ion batteries, the modelling of cell dynamics at the mircometer scale is an important focus of current mathematical research. These models lead to large-dimensional, highly nonlinear finite volume discretizations which, due to their complexity, cannot be solved at cell scale on current hardware. Model order reduction strategies are therefore necessary to reduce the computational complexity while retaining the features of the model. The application of such strategies to specialized high performance solvers asks for new software designs allowing flexible control of the solvers by the reduction algorithms. In this contribution we discuss the reduction of microscale battery models with the reduced basis method and report on our new software approach on integrating the model order reduction software pyMOR with third-party solvers. Finally, we present numerical results for the reduction of a 3D microscale battery model with porous electrode geometry.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 2 table

    Transport through a quantum spin Hall antidot as a spectroscopic probe of spin textures

    We investigate electron transport through an antidot embedded in a narrow strip of two-dimensional topological insulator. We focus on the most generic and experimentally relevant case with broken axial spin symmetry. Spin-non-conservation allows additional scattering processes which change the transport properties profoundly. We start from an analytical model for noninteracting transport, which we also compare with a numerical tight-binding simulation. We then extend this model by including Coulomb repulsion on the antidot, and we study the transport in the Coulomb-blockade limit. We investigate sequential tunneling and cotunneling regimes, and we find that the current-voltage characteristic allows a spectroscopic measurement of the edge-state spin textures.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

    INTEGRATING SOLAR ENERGY AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT RESILIENCE PLANNING

    Resilience and solar energy are separately growing in popularity for urban planners and similar professionals. This project links the two discrete terms together and examines the extent to which solar energy can improve local government resilience efforts. It includes a detailed literature review of both topics, as well as the methodology and findings related to a survey and interviews of local government officials and key stakeholders across the country related to hazard mitigation and energy assurance planning. This research finds that integrating the use of solar energy can improve local government resilience efforts related to mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery activities in the following ways: by being incorporated into hazard mitigation strategies as a means to maintain critical operations, thereby reducing loss of life and property; by being utilized in comprehensive planning efforts to increase capacity and decrease reliance and stress upon the grid, thereby reducing the likelihood of blackout events; by being used in tandem with backup storage systems as an integral part of energy assurance planning, which can help ensure critical functions continue in times of grid outage; by being used to provide power for response activities such as water purification, medicine storage and device charging; and by being used as an integral part of rebuilding communities in a more environmentally-conscious manner. The result of the research is a document entitled Solar Energy & Resilience Planning: a practical guide for local governments, a guidebook for local government officials wishing to have more information about incorporating solar energy into current resilience initiatives; it is included at the end of the report as Appendix C
